In around 1994 - 1995 a small group of local recreational boat owners started a weekly get-together on the private wharf of the Karuah Jetty Village.

One of these men was Ken Baker and it was after his suggestion in 1999 that the Karuah Motor Yacht Club have get-togethers at the oyster shed.

This started with a handful of local men and their families and from here they discussed fishing trips, boating recreational holidays were planned, barbeques, get-togethers and Christmas parties were enjoyed, together with members helping one another on both mechanical and structural knowledge of boats and exchanging ideas on boats.

June, 2004, we Incorporated the Karuah Motor Yacht Club with approximately 50 members. The name was registered and Incorporation was made official on 2nd June, 2004.

As at 30th January 2009 the membership of the Karuah Motor Yacht Club Inc. is a total of 232 current financial members in the KMYC. Not all of these members are boat owners and not all members are from the immediate area of Karuah. But, all members enjoy doing voluntary work for the local area and for the KMYC and the charity fundraising as well as the annual Christmas party and weekly barbeques and the organising of fishing trips and safe boating trips with the Port Stephens areas.

FUTURE OF KARUAH MOTOR YACHT CLUB INC.

The Karuah Motor Yacht Club Inc (KMYC) now holds a very motivated committee who are looking forward to a positive future.

The current site is the ideal location in the Port Stephens area for the KMYC as it has natural deep water access. Boats with flybridges and aerials and yachts with masts cannot travel north of the Karuah Bridge as access under the bridge is impossible.

Karuah is the "Gateway to Port Stephens" and this end of Port Stephens is perfect for what we, the Club and all its members envisage.

The members of the KMYC Inc. are very proud of the "Clubhouse", which is the old Oyster Shed and the atmosphere it generates. It is a welcoming and friendly place for both old and new members, visitors and young families in particular who can attend the premises and enjoy the area whilst in the care of their parents.

Ken Baker was presented with Life Membership of the KMYC. The shield was presented to him by Vice Commodore Jim Timony.

He was nominated for this award by members Paul & Jane Ayscough.
